Day 12 July 12, 2017 Rudesheim & Koblenz
First a correction to day 11– It was Kathy not Renae Lane karaoking with Fifi and Lorelay
Two stops today with sailing through the Rhine Gorge. Hillside vineyards, castles, villages and the Pfalz (Pfalzgrafenstein) Castle Toll Station on the Rhine River in the Rhine Gorge - built 1326-1327. We also had brief view of the famous Loreylay statue
Interesting was the Castle like structures built to disguise entrances to the railroad tunnels. During WWII the Allies was not allowed to bomb castle. Apparently technique was effective since we saw several intact “faux castles” castle, "railroad tunnel entrance",
Allies not allowed to bomb
Highlight in Rudesheim, and probably in top 5 of the trip, was the Musical Cabinet Museum. Amazing instruments– hard to get photos that do them justice. Ceiling and workshop were interesting as well. I was fascinated by the gramophone horns, sometimes referred to as pavillon, so many photos of them.
After lunch we sailed to Koblenz. Short guided tour then Anita, Isabel and I took the Gondola to visit the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. Great views from the fortress walls as well as from the gondola. The aerial view reminded me of Wertheim with it located at the junction of two rivers, here the Rhine and Mosel
